Close to the Brokenhearted

As part of the depression micro-series, I wanted to share what it says in God’s word about being brokenhearted. Before we dive deeper into meaning of these verses, let’s read it again in another translation.

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.”

- Psalms 34: 17-18 (NKJV)

According to the Enduring Word Bible Commentary, verse 17 begins with David (before he was king) sharing his testimony, about God delivering him out of all his troubles, with other men who were seeking refuge in a cave from King Saul (who was actively pursuing David to kill him). Talk about being in a bind! These men were distressed and discontent, similar to those with a broken heart and a remorseful spirit. But God!

“Broken hearts think God is far away, when he is really most near to them; their eyes are holden so that they see not their best friend. Indeed, he is with them, and in them, but they know it not.” (Spurgeon)

- Enduring Word Bible Commentary

This is an excellent example and reminder for us whenever difficulties come our way.

Remember what God has done for us and know that He is with us, even during our darkest hour.

It may not be easy at first, but the more time we spend with our God, the easier it becomes. I pray that all of us, including myself, will make seeking God during our troubles our natural instinct, in Jesus’ name!

VERSE 1:
Take this fainted heart
Take these tainted hands
Wash me in Your love
Come like grace again

CHORUS 1:
Even when my strength is lost
I’ll praise You
Even when I have no song
I’ll praise You
Even when it’s hard to find the words
Louder then I’ll sing Your praise

POST CHORUS:
I will only sing Your praise
I will only sing Your praise
I will only sing Your praise

VERSE 2:
Take this mountain weight
Take these ocean tears
Hold me through the trial
Come like hope again

CHORUS 2:
Even when the fight seems lost
I’ll praise You
Even when it hurts like hell
I’ll praise You
Even when it makes no sense to sing
Louder then I’ll sing Your praise

BRIDGE:
And my heart burns only for You
You are all You are all I want
And my soul waits only for You
And I will sing till the morning has come
Lord my heart burns only for You
You are all You are all I want
And my soul waits only for You
And I will sing till the miracle comes

CHORUS 3:
Even when the morning comes
I’ll praise You
Even when the fight is won
I’ll praise You
Even when my time on earth is done
Louder then I’ll sing Your praise
I will only sing Your praise
