Sorry I haven’t made a medicine post in a while! Studying for boards and other things happened, so that obviously gets first priority. I do, however, have a few posts that I have in the works for this section.

I officially started my third year of medical school! It was intimidating at first, since I’m actually interacting with patients as well as physicians, nurses, assistants, and other staff members. However, things are going much smoother now since I’m getting accustomed to the hours, the hospitals, and the staff. I luckily also had another third year medical student from another local medical school show me the ropes and help my transition a bit easier.

My initial start date was pushed back because I had the shingles. If you know anything about shingles, I would just like to confirm that it is as bad as they say it is. Instead of being discouraged from the temporary set back, I used that time to rest, relax, and meditate on God’s word (please read my post about the Armor of God under the Soul Food section). After finishing my course of Valacyclovir and having the shingles lesions go away, I felt re-centered and more determined to have and maintain my life in balance.

I’m starting off in general surgery, which is actually quite interesting. I’m learning so much more about surgery, which makes me respect surgeons that much more. Since my shingles episode prevented me from starting in August, I’ll have to complete my second block (another 4 weeks) of general surgery in a few months.

Other than that, I’m loving third year of medical school way more than the first two years!
